What we do

About Cats Protection

Cats Protection is the UK's leading feline welfare charity.

Our vision is to ensure that every cat is given the chance of a life where it will be treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs.

Our objectives are:

  • To find good homes for cats in need
  • To support and encourage the neutering of cats
  • To improve people's understanding of cats and their care.

Our policy on euthanasia:

Cats Protection does not euthanase healthy cats. Euthanasia of a cat is carried out only on the recommendation of a vet. The decision on euthanasia is based on welfare grounds and involves, in part, consideration of the cat’s current and potential quality of life, its degree of suffering and likelihood that this can be alleviated without causing further, undue suffering. In other words, if a cat has no chance of a good quality of life, if it is suffering from pain which is difficult to control and untreatable or from a terminal illness, the vet will recommend euthanasia in order to avoid unnecessary suffering.

About the Shetland Branch

The Shetland Branch of Cats Protection is the most northerly branch in the UK. The branch is run entirely by volunteers who carry out many important tasks, including rescuing stray cats; advising on and arranging neutering; and fostering cats and kittens. Our fundraising activities range from selling CP merchandise, crafts, bric-a-brac and raffle tickets to organising supermarket bag-packs and arranging fairs, competitions and various other social events.

All funds raised by the Shetland Branch of Cats Protection stay in Shetland to finance our voluntary work.

We have a purpose-built adoption centre to accommodate our rescued cats prior to homing.

We produce a newsletter twice a year to keep all our members informed of our activities.

If you would like to help the Shetland Branch of Cats Protection in any way, please visit the How You Can Help page.

Thank you for your support.
